Be watchful, student of this instant, for the kingdom of Heaven has come.
Not because the scriptures say so, not because we longingly imagine an end to suffering.
Dawn comes because the sun is already here. We do not see its light yet, but its light is stirring the darkness before our eyes.
And the structures of darkness will bubble up, rising with triumphant gestures, bellies swollen, the strain of their buffoonish grins full of confidence. The magical era of blossoming in our lives is preceded by the savage fury of the shadows that reigned for so long and soaked into every muscle of our body.
Be watchful, student. The world is deceiving.
Many things will happen before our eyes. Cataclysms, crises, diseases. Human misery will make itself felt without shame or measure, riding swiftly on the fears that hound us. They will seize governments and create oppositions. They will install problems and promise solutions. False prophets do not look like prophets; they live, sharp-toothed, behind everything we believe in: principles, identities, morals.
The sleeping eye will see nothing but the ups and downs, and its sleep will be heavy beneath the enormous urge to shake off the suffering that overwhelms it. The sleeping eye will not be quick enough in its gaze, and will let itself be bathed in murky descriptions of a reality ruled by hatred, cruelty and indifference. The sleeping eye will keep taking refuge in the hope that someday everything will change; that we will become, thanks to revolutionary actions on our side, a new humanity.
Be watchful, student. For betrayal lies in wait in everything you believe in.
That is what belief was made for: to hide betrayal inside it. No, these are not other people's betrayals, though belief says they are; everything we try to cover up by pointing at the world and asking for peace and justice is incongruence that dwells nowhere but within us.
